Jen in her Jammies: Understanding your Furry Family

It is important to understand the true nature of the members of our ‘furry family’.  But for many of us, our understanding is incomplete.

This incomplete understanding can cause us to act in ways that cause pain for our furry friends – albeit unintentional.  In this conversation, we explore several characteristics of animals that most humans don’t understand, and provide guidance as to how to best use this better understanding.  To illustrate …

Many of us don’t realise that dogs are so sensitive that us ‘freaking out’ when they become lost can affect a dog in a such a way that it forgets it even has a home.  It is far better to remain calm, tune in to the dog, and lovingly communicate the sense that you are at home, and you are waiting to welcome them back home.

Talking to a dog is important.  But the way we talk to them matters a lot.  This is because their mind only hears positive instructions.   So, it is unhelpful to tell them what not to do.  Instead, tell them what you would like them to do.  They can also learn from older dogs.

A very important characteristic of our furry friends is that they live in the moment.  So, if you go to a shelter and ‘rescue’ a dog that might have been mistreated in the past, it is best not to speak about their traumatic past, or to brag about how you saved them from it.  Speaking of a painful past causes them to re-live that past.  It is cruel – but few of us realise it.

Our furry friends are true friends.  They help us in many more ways than most of us understand.
